About SCORE

Founded in 1991, SCORE, was started outside the township of Khayelitsha in Cape Town South Africa.  This non-profit, non-governmental organisation was started by a former Olympic athlete in response to the critical situation faced by youth in impoverished townships in the country.  SCORE’s mission remains to set up sustainable sports and recreation activities for disadvantaged children and youth, and to use sport as a medium to teach life skills, empower people and build community.  SCORE is an African organisation with focused operations currently in South Africa, Namibia, Zambia and The Netherlands, and which is using its experience and expertise to provide training, facilitation and sports consultancy services to other organizations, primarily in the Southern African region.

SCORE focuses on three main areas:

1.  Community Sports Development and Development through Sport: Entering into long term partnerships with target communities and stakeholders in a process  to build, strengthen and institutionalize sport within community.

2.  Sport Training and Capacity Building: Offering training courses, event management, facilitation and other sports consultancy services to a variety of partners  and clients, in order to further develop their capacity in the sport and development sector.

3.  Sports Volunteers and Exchange: Recruiting sports volunteers locally and internationally and placing them in communities where they live and work to support  program implementation, share skills and ideas, and experience intercultural exchange.

Through sport leadership and life skills training, and the establishment of sustainable, democratic sports organising structures and ‘scoring for social change’ activities in communities and between communities, SCORE aims to demonstrate the power of sport as a development tool, and as a central driver of community transformation – changing negative gender stereotypes, encouraging community social responsibility, challenging prejudices and discrimination, and building bridges across cultural divides.

Changing lives through sport!
